Miranda Varo
(1997,Mexicali, Baja California) Licenciada en ciencias de la comunicación por la Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua y pasante de la Maestría en Artes Visuales por la Universidad de Nuevo León.
Galardonada por CREATECOP27, organizada por UNESCO y Art Partner, en 2022. Recibió mención honorífica en la Bienal de Baja California 2021. Seleccionada en la XI Bienal Nacional Universitaria de Arte Contemporáneo 2024. Fue residente en el programa de Mark Bradford con Hauser & Wirth en el Museo de Zapopan, 2023, y en el LAN en el Museo Universitario del Chopo con ISBL, 2023.
Ha participado en el Festival Internacional de Videoperformance Dislocada 2024, Todos Ponen Feria 2022, Tijuana Art Week 2025,Estación Material Vol.4 GDL, 2025, y ha expuesto colectivamente en México, Estados Unidos, Roma, Colombia y Puerto Rico .Acreedora al Estímulo PECDA 2025–2026 y residente en Casa Lagos 2026. Seleccionada para el programa educativo SOMA, generación 2026-2028
Formó parte del programa educativo LaBIAR (5ª generación), con sede en Ciudad de México en Lolita Pank. Su trabajo forma parte de las colecciones Elías + Fontes y Briseño.
Su práctica multidisciplinaria explora la actualidad como un recorte de tiempo y espacio que habita. Genera piezas que reflexionan sobre las dinámicas del territorio,el género, las narrativas de resistencia y la relación entre lo personal y lo colectivo en contextos fronterizos, construyendo ficciones donde se permite desdibujar y reescribir la cotidianidad.

(Mexicali, Baja California, 1997) Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua and is a candidate for a Master’s degree in Visual Arts at the University of Nuevo León.
Awarded by CREATECOP27, organized by UNESCO and Art Partner, in 2022. She received an Honorable Mention at the Baja California Biennial 2021 and was selected for the 11th National University Biennial of Contemporary Art 2024. She was a resident in the program led by Mark Bradford with Hauser & Wirth at the Museo de Zapopan in 2023, and in the LAN program at the Museo Universitario del Chopo with ISBL in 2023.
She has participated in the International Videoperformance Festival Dislocada 2024, Todos Ponen Feria 2022, Tijuana Art Week 2025, and Estación Material Vol. 4 (Guadalajara, 2025), and has exhibited collectively in Mexico, the United States, Rome, Colombia, and Puerto Rico. She is currently a recipient of the PECDA 2025–2026 grant and an artist-in-residence at Casa Lagos.
She is part of the LaBIAR educational program (5th generation), based in Mexico City at Lolita Pank. Her work is included in the Elías + Fontes and Briseño collections.
Her multidisciplinary practice explores contemporaneity as a fragment of the time and space she inhabits. She creates works that reflect on the dynamics of territory, gender, narratives of resistance, and the relationship between the personal and the collective in border contexts, constructing fictions that allow her to blur and rewrite everyday life.
Statement
Mi trabajo explora la intersección entre identidad, género y territorio en la frontera norte de México, un espacio donde la proximidad con Estados Unidos acentúa dinámicas de explotación y precarización. La frontera no es solo una delimitación geográfica, sino una estructura de poder que clasifica cuerpos, restringe movimientos recordándonos constantemente nuestra otredad. Pero también es un espacio de resistencia disidente, donde se conglomeran aquellxs que creen posibles otrxs futuros mejores o quienes habitan el desierto gestando nuevas formas de sobrevivir.
A través de la instalación, la escultura, el performance y la pintura, busco investigar cómo la frontera y la promesa del progreso opera como una maquinaria de violencia sistemática.El contraste entre lo industrial y lo DIY,lo rígido y lo efímero ;como una acción sobre las tensiones que definen la vida en este espacio. Los binarios, los límites preestablecidos sobre ellos buscar nuevas formas de habitarlos.Crecí en un lugar donde parecían inamovibles estas fronteras.Por ello buscó crear nuevos portales hacia formas de imaginar este territorio, no solo como un espacio de exclusión, sino también de resistencia y reconfiguración.Hablar desde las otredades, esas que siempre he habitado; desde el desierto y la disidencia sexual.
My work explores the intersection between identity, gender, and territory along Mexico’s northern border—an area where proximity to the United States intensifies dynamics of exploitation and precarity. The border is not only a geographical demarcation, but also a structure of power that classifies bodies and restricts movement, constantly reminding us of our otherness. Yet it is also a space of dissident resistance, where those who believe in the possibility of other, better futures come together, and where others inhabit the desert, shaping new ways to survive.
Through installation, sculpture, performance, and painting, I investigate how the border and the promise of progress operate as a machinery of systemic violence. The contrast between the industrial and the DIY, the rigid and the ephemeral, acts as a gesture toward the tensions that define life in this space. I am interested in questioning binaries and pre-established boundaries, searching for new ways to inhabit them.
I grew up in a place where these borders seemed immovable. For that reason, I seek to create new portals to imagine this territory not only as a space of exclusion, but also of resistance and reconfiguration—to speak from the otherness I have always inhabited, from the desert, and from sexual dissidence.
